I’m pleased to present you with the May-June 2018 issue of the Journal of Global Issues & Solutions.

 

This issue focuses on Economics in the Developing World. Our Page One Feature Paper, authored by Professor Ali Abdalla Ali of Sudan’s Omdurman Ahlia University, is titled “Empowerment: An Important Factor in Aggravating Poverty, Inequality & Injustices in Sudan, 1989-2015.”  In his introduction, the author recalls that “In a very interesting lecture given by the Managing Director of the IMF, Christine Lagarde at the London School of Economics (Friday 8 June 2014), on Empowerment, the Amartya K. Sen lecture,  Lagarde tried to elaborate on the issue of empowerment which Sen has been thinking about for so many years. In fact she made a very sharp presentation on the question of empowerment; first of “the individual  –  and what that means for economic policy. Second, what is needed to help individual empowerment  –  the empowerment of the institutions. Third, what is needed in turn to help national economies flourish  –  empowerment of multilateralism.”(Lagarde).  Then in the end she tried to show how the institution she heads (the IMF) has applied the idea of empowerment and provided some cases. In fact I was attracted by the presentation such that I thought it worthwhile since it reflects a high degree of human morality,  justice, sanity and wisdom to venture and see how it has been applied in a less developed country such as Sudan (my home) between 1989 and 2015.”

 

Professor Ali  goes on to explain the implications of the challenges faced in Sudan during the 1989-2015 era, and the serious challenges still facing that nation today.

 

The following paper, with a slant toward the daunting economic situation in Zimbabwe, is titled “How Shall We Defeat Disparities of Wealth and Status?” Authored by Economist Edward Ingram of the Ingram School of Economics, located in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, this paper explains that “In days gone by, for many there was no unemployment. Nor were there any savings or lending banks. Life went on and people paid one another without recessions, depressions, or super-exuberance. The world’s economies are chaotic by nature. There are too many targets for monetary policy to be able to cope. This is a massive waste of resources. It causes monumental amounts of damage including social damage, ruining millions of families and businesses worldwide every year. Governments fall because of it and their replacements know no better.

The reason is quite elementary, but no one has addressed it before.” The author continues on to present a unique alternative to traditional financial systems.

 

Next, Mr. Nguyen Tran Bat, Hanoi-based Attorney and Business Consultant, presents “Economic and Political Reform in the Third World Nations”. While Vietnam has grown economically to the point that it is now categorized as a Low-Middle Income tier nation, its Third World roots have inspired many ideas for economic expansion and growth. The nation now boasts one of the fastest-growing Middle Classes in the world. In his paper Mr. Bat introduces his suggestions for continued growth and reform.

 

This issue concludes with Part XII of a special presentation in the topic area of Education: Life & Consciousness, by Naturalistic Philosopher Mr. Iain Kirkaldy-Willis of Spain’s Canary Islands. “The Nature of Thought” is an on-going series of visual presentations. The author explains that “the use of image/text presentations has been chosen as a stimulating, provocative and inspiring format for consciousness raising.  It is an approach that has evolved over the years from a wide variety of applications – as a gardener in Finland, piecing together a holistic agricultural approach to an adult educational community’s land and then making that part of that Folk High School’s curriculum – in use with villagers in the foothills of N. India, as a tool for awareness, healing and empowerment, in the face of socio-environmental collapse – in the designing of courses to meet adult needs for healing and change in the face of different kinds of personal crisis.” Excellent graphics and bright imagery vividly highlight this fascinating visual presentation.
